There is a long held misconception that different parts of the tongue are sensitive to different tastes. In reality, sweet, salty, bitter, sour and savoury can be sensed on all parts of the tongue, with the sides of the tongue generally being more sensitive than the middle. We have additional sensitivity to bitterness at the back of the tongue, and this is believed to be an evolutionary trait, so we can spit out poisonous or spoilt substances before they are swallowed.
3 Coffee Facts
Meticulous Espresso is an autonomous espresso machine operated with a robotic lever. It is one of the highest funded coffee Kickstarter campaigns currently at over $3,000,000. What makes it unique is its ten digital sensors that monitor every variable during extraction, including water temperature, pressure, flow rate, and even the weight of the liquid. This allows immense customisation making it relevant for both a seasoned barista and a novice who wants to set all parameters once and not tweak it again.
As of 2018, global coffee retail sales are the highest for Nescafe (>14%), followed by Nespresso (~5%) according to a paper published by Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University.
When used constantly, scales can diminish in accuracy over time. Many scales have a built in calibration feature which uses the difference between a certified weight, say 100g, and the scale reading of that particular weight to determine the correction that needs to be applied in order to regain full accuracy of the scales.
