Tools like the Melodrip and Gabi Drip Master were created to reduce agitation and increase clarity in pourover brews. Even gooseneck kettles can disturb the coffee bed if poured too aggressively, so these help distribute the water more evenly. They also mitigate micro-particles/fines migrating and stalling the brew.
Time is a variable that you don’t have direct control over, but changes when you alter another brew parameter. E.g.: reducing the grind size will increase brew time, making time a great indicator for when something has changed.
Scorching & tipping are roast defects that are visible as tiny burn marks or blisters on the beans. The former is visible on the exterior flat or round surface while the latter can be seen on the tips. These result in harsh, astringent, smokey and burnt flavours in the cup.
