Happy Friday! We hope you enjoy today’s edition of 1:3 whilst sipping on your daily cuppa.
1 Fun Thing
Did you know that simply petting a dog reduces cortisol levels, and therefore stress? Some colleges are putting this to practical use by having ‘pet therapy’ for students. Even if you’re not a dog owner, the next time you see a dog give them a quick cuddle and see how you feel after!
3 Facts
It is recommended that you wait a few days or a few weeks (depending on the roast level) from the roast date before grinding and brewing coffee. This is because CO2 that has built up inside the beans during the roasting process is slowly released — a process known as degassing. Failure to do so will cause the CO2 to hinder with the coffee extraction process.
Coffee beans originated in the wild in Ethiopia, and were first roasted and brewed in a way that is familiar to us now, in Yemen. For over a century, Yemen was the exclusive supplier of coffee to the world, with all of the coffee leaving from the Port of Mokha.
Any nice tasting water should be able to brew good coffee, right? Well, no. Depending on your brew method, around 88 - 99% of your coffee is water, and all water isn’t made equal. Minerals like magnesium and calcium are responsible for extracting the delicious flavours in your coffee, so having them in the right quantities in your brew water is key to getting all those flavours into your cup.
