1 Fun Fact
In honour of October being an exciting month (think: Halloween, Diwali, fall) here’s a fact about the month you likely didn’t know. The anglo-saxons used to call it Wintirfylleth, referring to the first full moon of winter. In early Germanic, October was known as Weinmond, meaning wine month (pre Oktoberfest?!).
3 Coffee Facts
When you’re grinding coffee beans, you may have noticed light brown flecks in your coffee powder. This dried silver skin or outer covering of the coffee bean is called chaff, and is a waste product from the roasting process. It imparts no taste and shouldn’t affect your brew.
Instead of filling the entire hopper, weighing and grinding only the quantity of beans needed for a given brew is termed single dosing. This is particularly popular amongst home brewers as leaving a large quantity of beans in the hopper exposes them to air and light, causing them to stale quicker.
When you grind coffee not everything you put in comes out. Eg: If you put in 18g of beans, you may only get 16.5g out. This means that 1.5g of these grounds stayed behind in the grinding chamber and is known as retention. With single dosing becoming more popular, grinder manufacturers are trying to use innovative design to dramatically reduce or even eliminate retention.
